Mass anarchist actions led to riots breaking out in Wamena City, the capital of Jayawijaya Regency, Highlands Papua Province, Thursday (23/2/2023).

As a result of the riots, as many as ten people were reported killed and 23 people were injured. Of the 23 people who were injured, 18 of them were members of the police who were attacked by the mob.

A total of 13 houses and shophouses were burned by the mob.

Of the ten people who died, two of them were sadistically killed by the mob. Meanwhile, 8 other people were reportedly killed by gunshots by local police officers.

Head of Public Relations, Polda Papua, Senior Commissioner of Police Ignatius Beny Ady Prabowo said the mass anarchist action was triggered by hoax information about child abductions that carried out kidnappings of minors in the area.

The masses, who are indigenous people, were angry and attacked officers who were about to take the suspected perpetrators of child kidnapping to the police station.

The crowd wanted to judge the alleged perpetrator who had been arrested by the local police.

According to Benny, as a result of the incident, 13 residents' houses and shop houses were burnt by the mob.

The mob also attacked police officers with traditional weapons and stones.

There were 18 policemen injured in the incident, while 5 other people were civilians. The masses also brutally slaughtered two overseas residents to death.

The police who were brutally attacked by an anarchist mob immediately acted repressively. As many as 8 people from the mob were reportedly killed by police shots.

Until now the security situation in the city of Wamena is gradually becoming conducive but residents' activities have not proceeded as usual.

The Indonesian police and military are still carrying out special security in the city of Wamena to avoid further mass actions allegedly infiltrated by the Armed Separatist Group in the area.
