Protests in Jayapura, Indonesia, turned into chaos yesterday (November 16) when hundreds of students took to the streets.

Protesters demonstrated in the courtyard of the Cenderawasih University Auditorium against the G-20 intergovernmental forum in Bali and the plan for solving the problem of violations of human rights in Papua Province, initiated by the National Commission on Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia.

The filmer said: "The situation got out of control as a result of a provocation from several irresponsible people who infiltrated the demonstrations and broke through police security. Some demonstrators threw stones at the police. The police immediately reacted and took firm action".

Jayapura City Police Chief Commissioner of Police, Viktor Dean Macbon, said the demonstration took place in three different locations in Jayapura.

Macbon said: "The situation got out of control because the demonstrators were moved from the location to the road. to carry out a long march".

Police officers assisted by Mobile Brigade Troops (Indonesian Police Special Forces) and TNI personnel used a car to disperse the crowd.

According to Macbon, three policemen were injured and seven students were detained.

Student demonstrations in Indonesia, to be precise in Jayapura City, Papua Province, which were carried out in the courtyard of the Cenderawasih University Auditorium, Wednesday (16/11/2022) this afternoon ended in chaos.

The demonstration by hundreds of students expressed their aspirations regarding the rejection of the G20 High Level Conference which is currently taking place in Denpasar, Bali. In addition, the students also rejected the plan for peaceful dialogue related to solving the problem of violations of human rights in Papua Province which was initiated by the National Commission on Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia.

From journalists' monitoring, at the location of the demonstration, which was carried out by hundreds of students, initially it proceeded safely. Several aspirations were conveyed by a number of orators in front of hundreds of demonstrators.

However, the situation got out of control, as a result of a provocation from a number of irresponsible people who infiltrated into the midst of the demonstrators and thus broke through the police security guard at the Cenderawasih University Gate. The masses forced them to carry out a long march towards the local Parliament Building. However, the mass action was not permitted by the police because they were afraid it would disrupt public order.

Not accepting this, a number of demonstrators who were unscrupulous students threw stones at the police. The police immediately reacted and took firm action against the demonstrators.

Police officers assisted by Mobile Brigade Troops (Indonesian Police Special Forces) and TNI personnel using a car to disperse the crowd immediately forcibly dispersed, thus driving back the demonstrators who began to act anarchically into the Uncen Abepura Campus.

Jayapura City Police Chief Commissioner of Police, Viktor Dean Macbon, said the demonstration took place in three different locations in Jayapura.

"The situation got out of control because the demonstrators who were provoked suddenly moved from the demonstration location to the road body, to carry out a long march. However, the demonstrators were successfully dispersed and beaten back by the security forces," he told a number of journalists.

According to Viktor, at first the demonstration proceeded safely, but the masses moving from the demonstration location were provoked so that they crossed the line that had been set up by the police.

As a result of the riot, according to Victor, 3 policemen were injured and 7 students were detained by the police for questioning in relation to the provocateurs of the action and actions against the officers.
