Thousands of residents were displaced due to the riots that occurred in Wamena, Papua, Indonesia. Among them there are 50 Wamena residents from West Sumatra. Besides them, hundreds of residents from Minangkabau, West Sumatra, are also being repatriated gradually.
They were forced to flee to their hometowns, because of the trauma of seeing the incident and losing their property. On Friday night October 3 2019, they landed at Minangkabau International Airport.
According to a number of refugees, riots occurred on 23 September. Starting from a demonstration by students in Wamena and then culminating in attacks by rioters on residents. According to them, hundreds of rioters pelted residents' houses and shops with stones and arrows. Then there was burning. As a result of the incident, 33 people were declared dead. Nine of them originated from West Sumatra and have been buried in the South Coast of West Sumatra.
Although the Indonesian government says conditions in Wamena are gradually conducive, some refugees are reluctant to return. But others hope to return to Wamena, if security is truly guaranteed and conditions return to normal.
