A ferry collided with an oil tanker off the coast of the Philippines due to strong wind and waves on Tuesday afternoon.

The LCT BATO TWIN I ship carrying 69 passengers was manoeuvring out of the Tampi Port in Negros Oriental province when it slammed into the PETRO HELEN motor tanker approaching a nearby oil berth on March 7.

The ship's crew told authorities that due to the strong wind and waves, they did not notice the oncoming tanker, causing them to slam into its bow.

The railings of the LCT BATO TWIN I, which also had 14 containers onboard at the time, were damaged. The tanker's bow sustained scratches.

There were no injuries or casualties reported.

Passengers on the ship were transferred to a different vessel.

Lieutenant Nino Aniban, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Negros Oriental, told reporters: 'Because of the strong winds and current of the sea, the captain was not able to see that the motor tanker Petro Helen was behind. We held and invited both captains for inquiries.'

The PCG added that both parties have agreed to enter into an amicable settlement.
