To minimize conflict between humans and wild elephants in Riau Province, the Riau Conservation and Natural Resources Center installed a Geographic Positioning System (GPS) collar for three wild elephants.
With the installation of this GPS collar, early anticipation efforts can be made by herding wild elephants back into forest areas as their habitat. So that it is hoped that it will not have a negative impact on society
The installation process goes through several stages such as socialization and education on the benefits of the GPS Collar to representatives of the parties and the community which are often traversed by wild elephants. Then, they also held preparatory meetings, surveyed the whereabouts of the target group of elephants and conditioned the implementation team and equipment.
The three wild elephants that were fitted with GPS collars were female elephants aged 45 years having a baby of three months weighing 3765 kg. The next elephant, also an adult female, is estimated to be pregnant with an estimated body weight of approximately 2 tons 2067 kg. And finally the elephant is about 35 years old and weighs 3514 kg.
The GPS collar that is installed will function optimally as a means of mitigating the negative interactions of wild elephants if the awareness and cooperation of the affected community in carrying out herding wild elephants independently into forest areas as their habitat is well developed.
