A hero pet dog chased away aggressive strays that tried to attack a schoolboy.

The brave pooch named Chao Uan heard the violent barks coming from the streets just as the fourth grader Phrompiriya Nimkul stepped out to play in Trang province, Thailand on March 15 afternoon.

But the protective creature immediately sensed danger and bounded out of the gates when the sounds grew louder.

Footage shows two dogs aiming to lunge at the youngster who backed away and used the stick he had been playing with to defend himself.

While Phrompiriya appeared confused, Chao Uan scared the intruders, quickly leaving the scene upon seeing him.

The boy's mother Busaraphan Phromaksorn said: ‘We adopted Chao Uan when we found him in the streets as a puppy. It was one of the best decisions we have ever made.

‘If not for him, the dogs would have injured our little boy. We were just relieved that no one was hurt.'

Chao Uan stood on the streets, seemingly making sure that the rabid creatures had gone.

Meanwhile, the scared boy watched the dog from their home's gates.

No one was hurt in the incident and the youngster's mum gave Chao Uan a delicious meat lunch as a reward.
