A partly built school in Cornwall has been written off before completion.

Demolition work began at the site in Newquay on Monday (April 3) after one of the country’s largest modular construction specialists went into receivership before the completion of a new primary academy meant for 420 pupils.

Constructed on land next to the existing Newquay Tretherras academy, the new primary was due to open in September 2022 but has been temporarily housed in a local sports centre.

Classrooms have been constructed within an area including what was once the bar of the nearby local sports centre.

The Department of Education looked at a re-procurement process to complete the work but building firms were not able to accept responsibility for existing structures and materials.

Caledonian Modular, based in Newark, Nottinghamshire, was one of the largest modular building companies in the country with 200 employees. It went into administration in March 2022. The projected cost to taxpayers for a new school of this size based on published Government figures would have been in the region of £6 million.
