Solar and wind energy is being developed in China's drought-ridden Qaidam Basin in northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province is located in the Qaidam Basin. It has accelerated the construction of large photovoltaic and wind power projects to promote clean energy development.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LAN ZHIHUI, Deputy director, Energy Administration of Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture
"The prefecture is very well endowed with solar and wind energy. The vast desert and unused land here will accommodate an installed capacity of 920 million kilowatts. Since the beginning of 2022, we've launched five new energy projects, with an installed capacity of 2.9 million kilowatts."
Qaidam Basin is one of the three major inland basins in China. Its current climate features drought and strong winds, and its temperature varies greatly between day and night.
