Tourists pose for pictures in front of a monorail bridge emblazoned with 'Bangkok' on Tuesday, June 27, as officials hope that rising visitor numbers will boost the country's economy.

The piece of infrastructure carrying the city's BTS Skytrain above ground has become an unlikely landmark for holidaymakers to show they are on their trip to Thailand.

Analysts believe a surge in tourist numbers - particularly from China - will help the Thai baht currency recover following a slide in its value and uncertainty over the country's quasi-democratic elections in May.

Poonyawat Sreesing from Thailand's Siam Commercial Bank said: 'A significant influx of tourists in the second half can contribute to a surplus in the current account by boosting tourism receipts, which will positively affect the value of the baht.'
