Driver arrested as BMW strikes pedestrians leaving 2 dead in China
A driver was arrested after his car struck pedestrians, resulting in two fatalities and six injuries in eastern China.
Video filmed in the city of Yancheng in Jiangsu Province on July 13 shows multiple scooters toppling over at the intersection, with several individuals seemingly injured and lying on the ground.
A black BMW car is visible not far away on the pedestrian sidewalk with its doors open, all its airbags deployed, and the front end of the car seriously damaged.
A local merchant located just 10 to 20 metres from the crash site reported hearing the impact and rushing to the scene. She saw numerous individuals on the ground, most unable to move, suggesting these victims may have been waiting at a red light when struck.
The offending vehicle reportedly mounted the curb before coming to a halt on the pedestrian sidewalk, with the driver - a male - exiting the car and immediately making a phone call.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
