A wild monitor lizard wandering inside a school tried and failed to enter a classroom.

Footage shows the reptile crawling alongside the wall while looking for an entrance at the Rajamangul University of Technology in Surin province, Thailand, on May 25.

It stopped for a while in front of the door before jumping up to climb, but it wouldn't open.

Amusingly, the creature gave up and crawled back to the corner before leaving the compound.

Professor Siwathida Phumworamuni, who saw the animal, said: ‘I have been working at the university for 15 years but it was the first time that I had seen a monitor lizard around.

‘I don't know why it wanted to go inside the classroom but it failed. The lizard left after that.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
