"The 31st International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games officially kicked off Friday in Chengdu, the hometown of the giant pandas and also one of the most vibrant cities in China."
The Chengdu Universiade runs from July 28 to August 8 in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
6,500 athletes from 113 countries and regions will take part in 18 sports and 269 events on the competition schedule.
A series of cultural and people-to-people exchange activities will also be held during the sporting event.
