STORYLINE:

Saturday marks International Tiger Day, a day to raise awareness of the endangered tiger species and to promote conservation efforts.

In a national park in northeast China, the population of wild Siberian tigers is on the rise, thanks to the country's persistent efforts.

Spanning an area of over 1.4 million hectares in Jilin and Heilongjiang, the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park is a pilot project for Siberian tigers and Amur leopards.

Various wildlife protection measures have been implemented in the park.

Daily patrol is a must.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): DING GUOWEI, Ranger, Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park
"Our routine work in summer is to patrol the forest - everyone has an area he is in charge of - and collect information about animal diseases and so on. In winter, we patrol on certain routes. Our task last winter included 110 routes, with each about 5 kilometers long. We need to patrol on foot. If we find animal tracks, we will take photos and report to the park administration."

The park has also adopted a real-time monitoring system.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): ZANG PENG, Ranger, Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park
"The system can transfer real-time data so that we no longer need to go to the camera sites to bring the data back. This is of great help to our research work."

The system uses artificial intelligence to record the appearances of the animals, and big data analysis enables researchers to know the conditions of different species and habitats.

The population of wild Siberian tigers in the park has expanded to over 50, compared to 27 in 2017.

Siberian tigers, also known as Amur or Manchurian tigers, are one of the most endangered animals in the world. They mainly live in eastern Russia, northeast China, and the northern part of the Korean Peninsula.
