Cargo vessel runs aground amid Super Typhoon Saola in the Philippines
A cargo vessel ran aground during super typhoon Saola in the Philippines.
The LCT Golden Bella was carrying heavy equipment when it was swept onto shore off Ilijan town in Batangas City on August 30 afternoon.
The Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog said the ship had left Palawan island and was bound to the capital Manila, but encountered rough seas and strong winds while looking for anchorage area.
The Philippine Coast Guard's (PCG) Marine Environmental Protection Force and Special Operations Unit was dispatched to survey the damage.
All 12 crew members onboard were safe.
The Golden Bella had been carrying 13,500 litres of fuel. There were no reports of oil leakage so far, the PCG said.
Authorities have advised the vessel's owner Golden Anchor Shipping Lines Corporation to use a tugboat to tow the ship safely.
Typhoon Saola, known locally as 'Goring', intensified into a super typhoon on August 27, state weather agency PAGASA said.
It tore through the Philippines' northern provinces over the weekend, displacing more than 2,000 people, officials said.
PAGASA said Saola had re-intensified to super typhoon strength late Tuesday evening as it approached the country's northernmost island of Batanes. It was expected to maintain its strength as it churns northwest toward Taiwan before slamming into southern China and Hong Kong.
