A huge group of 100 hammerhead sharks surrounded scuba divers in mesmerising footage.

Bernard Collantes was leading a group off Mikomoto Island, Japan, on August 8 when they were joined by a huge shiver of sharks.

Hypnotic footage shows more than 100 hammerheads gliding through the water at a depth of just 15 metres.

The divers clung on to a nearby reef as they watched the majestic sharks swim past in unison just a few feet away.

Bernard, from Mikomoto Hammers, said: “It’s always awesome seeing the sharks in big numbers. There were at least 100 of them swimming around us for 25 minutes.

“Only here in Mikimoto Island can we see them in such huge numbers and as shallow as five metres.

“This is the best season to see more of them. Mikomoto Island is 10km away from the Izu peninsula and this is where the Kuroshio current hits.

“The best season is from early summer to autumn where visibility can be more than 20 meters and the water is nice and warm. That’s why sharks love this island.”
