NCC protests in support of suspended Public Protector
Cape Town, 11 September 2023: Coloured minority rights party, The National Coloured Congress (NCC), formerly known as the Cape Coloured Congress (CCC) protested in front of the Cape Town City Hall where parliament is sitting, to protest against the parliamentary vote to remove the suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane. A two-thirds parliamentary majority is required to remove her from office.
The vote comes after a section 194 enquiry came to the conclusion that Mkhwebane is unfit to hold office. Mkhwebane was last year suspended by President Cyril Ramaphosa after she initiated an investigation into alleged money laundering at the president’s Phala Phala game farm. The Democratic Alliance has indicated that they will vote in favour of the motion in support of the ruling African National Congress.
NCC members protesting in front of the City Hall were requested by riot police to leave the area as they were in the process of securing the area for the parliamentary sitting. Parliamentary sittings have been taking place at the Cape Town City Hall since a fire gutted the parliamentary buildings in last year.
Paul Bester, the Western Cape Provincial Secretary for the NCC said the Public Protector has shown that corruption is rife in government and that President Ramaphosa and the ANC government are using their powers to intimidate her.
