Trade unions in South Africa have announced they will embark on a national strike due to the lack of personal protective equipment.

Footage from September 30 shows members of South Africa's largest trade union federation, COSATU, address the media.

COSATU will be handing over memorandums of demands on October 7 to the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Provincial Government as well as Parliament.

They will be protesting the lack of personal protective equipment, the failure of the government to address public transport issues affecting workers, the undermining of collective bargaining by the government in the public sector and issues of corruption within state institutions.
