Cargo Ship Burns in the Mentawai Sea, Evacuation of Crew and Master is Tense
A cargo ship departing from the port of Muara Padang, West Sumatra for Sipora Island, Mentawai Regency, early Thursday morning (21/09/2023) at 01.00 WIB caught fire badly in the middle of the sea. The ship with the KM Buana Indah brand hull could not be saved and eventually sank along with its cargo. Meanwhile, the process of evacuating the seven crew members and the ship's captain was tense. The reason is, the victims who had been floating in the open sea for more than an hour were successfully evacuated when the waves were quite high. They were rescued by fishermen from the Bagan Ratih 2 boat, from Surantih, Pesisir Selatan Regency.
According to the Head of the Mentawai Islands Regency Water and Air Police Unit (Satpol Airud), AKP Jon Fitri, KM Buana Indah traveled from Padang to Sipora Mentawai, on Wednesday afternoon (20/09/2023). However, on Thursday at 01.00 WIB in the morning, the ship caught fire and sank.
