A new luxury shopping mall has been opened amid a gentrification push in Bangkok, Thailand.

The six-storey EmSphere mall was packed with locals for its grand opening in the capital's Sukhumvit Road - still divided between high-rise tower blocks and seedy bars- on December 1.

The upmarket shopping centre spanning 200,000 square metres is directly connected to the Phrom Phong BTS train station and aims to cater to affluent locals and foreign tourists in Bangkok.

Supaluck Umpujh, chairwoman of mall operator The Mall Group, said EmSphere's launch marks the completion of the company's EM District project - a massive 30 billion THB (856 million USD) commercial development plan that includes the group's EmQuartier and Emporium malls.

Among the highlights of EmSphere is IKEA Sukhumvit, which occupies an entire floor of the building and is the 'first city centre IKEA in Thailand'.

The mall also houses the UOB Live venue which can seat up to 6,000 people for various events.

Food enthusiasts can indulge in a variety of cuisines, ranging from street food to dishes crafted by Michelin-starred chefs at EmSphere's many dining options. While those looking for a nighttime hangout can enjoy themselves at the Em Wonder zone with nightclubs, beach clubs, and bars.

There are also more than 300 tenants offering fashion items, lifestyle products, health and wellness services, and cosmetics.

The mall has future plans to welcome renowned brands, including the third branch of Apple Store in Thailand, the first Tesla showroom in the country, and the second Thai branch of Shake Shack.

EmSphere is open daily from 10 am to 10 pm.
