Bookworms were left in awe of a stunning portrait made from hundreds of stacked books.

Footage shows the 24ft (7m) mural titled Discarded Romance, located at the Fully Booked bookstore on Bonifacio High Street in Manila, the Philippines.

The installation features 3,000 discarded books serving as a huge canvas.

The spines and covers of the books have been painted with various shades to create a likeness of a woman accompanied by a pink cat wearing a teal-coloured bow.

It is the work of Mike Stilkey, a Los Angeles-based artist renowned for his large-scale installations and sculptures that utilise salvaged books as his primary medium.

Mike Stilkey said that the challenge when working with this unique canvas was the uneven texture and the gaps between the books.

The artist used a mixture of ink, coloured pencils, paint, and lacquer to create his masterpiece.
