Construction of new giant wind turbines near Wareham in Dorset nearing completion following 20-year planning battle.
Aerial view of the controversial new giant wind turbines which are under construction at Masters Quarry near Wareham on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. The Alaska Wind Farm project which was the subject of 20 year planning and legal battle, is nearing completion after a delay of a year due to the general shortage of materials, rising prices and labour shortages and problems with getting design approval for the switch connection to the grid. Each tower is 100 metres tall, 125 metres to the tip of the blades, which is more than twice the height of Nelson’s Column. Once the wind farm is up and running, eight megawatts of power will be fed into the national grid from the four Vestas 2MW turbines which are expected to generate enough zero-carbon electricity to meet the annual demand of more than 5,000 homes via a substation at Wareham. Alongside the wind farm, a solar farm with 88,000 panels on 30 acres of land, will add a further 26 megawatts. It’s estimated the combined output of the wind and solar farm will generate enough renewable electricity to meet the demands of all the homes in Swanage, Wareham and the rest of the Isle of Purbeck.
