Houses in a village in Qinghai Province were swept away and some residents are still missing after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked the area on December 18.

Footage from Zhongchuanxiang shows various buildings decimated by a mudslide.

Han Yanyan, a senior engineer at the China Seismological Network Center, said that after many major earthquakes, the so-called "sand surge phenomenon" will occur.

After a strong earthquake occurs, due to the vibration of the earth's crust, the water-bearing sand deep underground will undergo a strong liquefaction. This liquefied sand layer will be squeezed along certain channels and will directly reach the surface.
