Cape Malay Choirs kickoff New Year's Eve festivities
Cape Town, South Africa - 31 December 2023: The Primrose Male Voice Choir started their New Year's Eve marches through the Cape Town suburbs of Wetton and Lansdowne. Since colonial times the Nag Troepe (Night Troops) have marched into Bo Kaap on New Year's Eve while the Kaapse Klopse or Cape Minstrels march on 2 January.
Moeshfieka Botha a local resident and community activist said the marching of the choirs is a reminder of where they come from becaause the Malay choirs are a representation of slavery that was was brought to the shores of Cape Town.
Every New Year's Eve thousands of people line the streets of the Cape Town CBD into Bo Kaap to watch the choirs march into the early hours opf the morning.
