This grim footage showing hundreds of dead fish floating on the surface of a small lake horrified locals in China.

Images captured by an unnamed passerby show a large number of silver carp lying dead in the water of the East Lake in Donghu Park, located in Kunming, in Yunnan Province.

According to witnesses, there have been two instances of lake fish suddenly turning up dead on the surface within a week.

The person who filmed the footage said the horrid event was first observed on December 19, and then again on the 25.

Park managers said that there are several factors causing the deaths.

One reason is the toxic substances released from the muddy bottom of the lake poisoning the fish, according to the staff.

Another factor is the lack of oxygen, staff added.

The park emphasised its concern and stated that they would address the issue as soon as possible.
