Fire rips through car park at 'world's worst airport'
A fire ripped through a car park and damaged 19 vehicles at a notorious airport in the Philippines.
Footage shows smoke billowing from the parking area as the fire spread across the Nino Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 carpark extension in Pasay City on April 22.
The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said the fire started 'from a small grass fire that rapidly progressed' at 1:28 pm.
The Bureau of Fire Protection said it was extinguished at 2:03 pm with no casualties or injuries reported.
The fire did not affect flight operations, MIAA general manager Eric Ines said.
Ground crew member John Romel Domagtoy said: 'I was working at the airport's Terminal 3 when I noticed through the glass window that there was thick black smoke rising from the parking area.
'The passengers were in chaos and they were taking pictures and videos.
'The fire spread quickly because the grass was dry. There were firefighters trying to extinguish it. A few minutes later, more fire trucks arrived, but it took them a while because of traffic at the arrival and departure area of the airport.'
American luggage app Bounce listed the state-run Ninoy Aquino International Airport as the world's worst airport for business class travellers in 2022. It ranked bottom 38th out of 38 busy airports all over the world.
This year, it was ranked '4th worst airport in Asia' for business travellers by UK website businessfinancing.co.uk, citing passenger reviews for international airports from airlinequality.com.
In September last year, an airport screener was caught on camera allegedly swallowing a wad of stolen cash from a tourist worth 300 USD.
In 2013, a high-profile extortion racket called 'drop bullet' was uncovered, where airport personnel allegedly planted bullets in luggage to extort passengers.
In March, horrified passengers found bed bugs on the benches and rats scurrying across the ceiling in the departure lounge.
