STORYLINE:

The Chongqing International Friendship Cities Cooperation Conference 2024 was held from Tuesday to Wednesday in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

Themed "Sub-national Cooperation for Common Development," the event brought together mayors and representatives from cities around the world, foreign diplomats, and delegates from international organizations, multinational corporations and business associations.

Participants from the U.S. San Francisco Bay Area, home to Silicon Valley, a renowned global hub for innovation, expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with China during the conference.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ANISSA WILLIAMS, Mayor of the city of Oakley
"I think we both have a lot to offer each other. I want to deepen the collaborations. Logistics, transportation. Those are all things that are very important to us.
We have a substantial potential to work on high-tech industries and entrepreneurship with Oakley's thriving entrepreneur center and Chongqing's robust technological infrastructure.
We want to foster innovation and support and exchange programs, especially to make sure that culturally, both cities can benefit from the relationship that we have with each other."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ANTONIO LOPEZ, Mayor of the city of East Palo Alto
"For me, my mission in this conference is to really spread the word and promote better relationships. I went representing my city to be an example and start a better dialogue with the Chinese people starting in Chongqing."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): JOHN DUGAN, Mayor of the city of San Carlos
"I'm here learning. It's educational for me and it's an exchange and we're certainly interested in collaboration.
I'm sure there are opportunities for the cities to work together. And we've been told of some educational exchange opportunities and I think that has potential as well."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): MARILYN LIBRERS, President of China Silicon Valley
"I think that the relationship between China and Silicon Valley is unique because you are very fast-forward in your thinking for innovation and startups. That's what Silicon Valley is known for. So by my organization and my friendships in China, we are able to help people invest in both countries and also we sponsor delegations to come to Silicon Valley. So they can learn our business practices. In turn, we bring delegations here to learn your business practices and that helps both nations and it helps the entrepreneurs to grow."
