Heroic rescue as man saves heart attack victim with CPR and AED
On the morning of May 17th, a dramatic incident unfolded in a residential community in Bantian, Longgang District, southern China. A 61-year-old man, while out for a morning jog, unexpectedly suffered a myocardial infarction and collapsed.
Wang Yanjun, who was also jogging nearby, noticed the situation and quickly assessed that the man's heart and breathing had likely stopped. Drawing on his prior emergency training, Wang immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), continuously pressing on the man's chest to maintain blood circulation.
Minutes later, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) arrived. Following the AED's instructions, Wang proceeded with defibrillation. Fortunately, after Wang's efforts, the man began to show signs of responsiveness. The AED advised continuing chest compressions, and neighbors sustained the resuscitation efforts until the ambulance arrived. The paramedics swiftly transported the patient to the hospital for further treatment.
Doctors diagnosed the man with sudden cardiac arrest during his run. Thanks to the prompt emergency measures, his vital signs have stabilized, and he is expected to be moved out of the intensive care unit soon. The doctors emphasized that the timely CPR was crucial for his recovery, providing critical time for subsequent medical interventions.
It is reported that Wang Yanjun is a Senior Specialist in Fire and Emergency Management at Shenzhen China Resources Sanjiu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. In his spare time, he frequently participates in first aid training sessions organized by the Shenzhen Emergency Center and the community. Wang has held a "Basic First Aid" certification from the Shenzhen Emergency Center since 2019.
An AED, or Automated External Defibrillator, is a portable medical device used primarily to treat sudden cardiac arrest patients. It can detect the heart's rhythm and, in the event of a stoppage, automatically deliver a defibrillation shock. These shocks, delivered at a rate of 150-200 per minute, mimic the natural heartbeat, helping to restore a normal heart rhythm.
