Plucky pet dogs chased away two huge elephants that emerged from the forest and barged into a property.

The female pooch named Boon Lai along with the two other males Thong Dee and Jab spotted the jumbos crossing a road in Chachoengsao province, Thailand on May 25 evening.

But instead of being intimidated by the size of the wild animals, the trio defiantly guarded the area against the intruders and ran after them.

Footage shows the first dog tailing the elephants followed by the two others. The brave dogs pushed the two animals off the local's yard, forcing them to hide in nearby trees.

A park ranger said: 'It happened while the 13th Ranger Forces Regiment was coordinating with the locals and their dogs to help us with the larger of the two elephants, whose name is Bid.

‘Around 6:30 pm Bid and another elephant arrived and the dogs chased them away, helping us with our task.'

The park ranger said they thanked the pooches for helping look out for the elephants.

He said: ‘We also apologised to their owners because we forgot to bring snacks for their good dogs.'

Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.
