A pack of plucky pet dogs chased away two wild elephants that had wandered into a residential area in Thailand.

The pair of brave mutts charged at the jumbos that had walked from the forest into a village in Chachoengsao province at around 7 am on June 14.

As the elephants ran across the road, two more dogs in the neighbourhood joined in and barked to drive them away.

With the canines snapping at their feet, the spooked wild animals trumpeted in panic while retreating into the forest.

Somuang Chantachot, head of the local elephant watch volunteers, said he captured the David and Goliath style showdown on camera while following the elephants.

He said: 'I spotted the elephants emerging from the woods at around 4:30 am. We radioed to the town and warned residents to be careful when the creatures passed through the road at around 7:00 am.

'The dogs did our job for us and chased the elephants back into the jungle.'

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
