After a 10-hour struggle, forest officials rescued a two-year-old wild elephant that fell into a well in a private garden near Gudalur in the Nilgiris district. The elephant had been searching for food and water with other wild elephants and fell into the well on the night of May 28.

The rescue operation, involving a JCP machine to create a path, began early in the morning and concluded with the elephant chasing the rescuers. One forester narrowly escaped by climbing to safety.
