Elephant rescued from narrow 15-feet-deep well in eastern India
An elephant calf was rescued from a narrow 15-feet-deep (4.5m) abandoned well in India on Saturday 10 April.
The young elephant was rescued with the help of an excavator and wildlife officials.
The incident took place in the Deuli forest range in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.
Local residents, spotting the stuck elephant, alerted forestry officials to its plight. They then organised its rescue.
Visuals show the distressed elephant trapped inside the well as the locals gathered to watch the rescuers at work.
The forestry officials and the fire department hauled the baby elephant out with the help of an excavator and ropes.
The calf had accidentally fallen into the well the night before, while it was roaming in the area.
“We were informed of the movement of the elephant and we immediately rushed to the spot and rescued with the help of the local fire department," said Rabi Narayan Mohanty, Range Officer, Deuli Forest Range.
