USA: Javier Milei gives a speech at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University
Stanford, CA, USA - May 29, 2024
Argentine President Javier Milei continued his lecture at Stanford University's Hoover Institution on Wednesday.
The president's presentation to students focused on economic theory with criticisms of neoclassical models, the weighting of monopolies and the importance of deregulating the economy.
He then held a meeting with the rector of the university, Richard Saller, and with the director of the Hoover Institution, former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
SOUNDBITE: Javier Milei, President of Argentina:
"The social responsibility of the businessman is to make money, because if he makes money he is a hero, because what he is doing is generating better quality goods at a better price, therefore he is a creator of welfare. And if you intervene with the argument of wealth distribution, inequality and those kinds of issues that socialism attacks, the counterpart is that they think 'why am I going to make an effort if they are going to take away the fruit of my work? There's no point in working'.
"Monopolies are not bad. If there are 10 companies, and one creates a better quality product or a better price, what do you think will happen to the other 9? They will go bankrupt! But that businessman who sends the other 9 out of business is a social benefactor, because he is giving me a better quality product at a better price... in other words, he is making my life easier".
"It's going to be much better if we get the state out of the middle of our lives, thank you very much."
