STORYLINE:
The Ivorian non-governmental organization 350 COTE D'IVOIRE on Friday held a beach cleanup event to mark World Environment Day and World Oceans Day.
Held under the theme "Thinking about Climate Action in Another Way," the event aims to call on the Ivorian people to clean up beach garbage and protect the environment.
SOUNDBITE 1 (French): THERESE AHOU, Volunteer
"I clean the beach for the environment, my health, and the fish in the sea. If these fish eat the garbage and if we eat them, our lives will be in danger."
SOUNDBITE 2 (French): CHEICK TRAORE, Representative of 350 COTE D'IVOIRE
"The month of June is marked by many celebrations in favor of the environment and the ocean. World Environment Day takes place on June 5 each year, and World Oceans Day takes place on June 8 each year.
As an NGO that fights climate change, especially plastic pollution, and focuses on renewable energy, we want to celebrate these meaningful days in our own way. The theme of our event is 'Thinking about Climate Action in Another Way' and we decided to carry out a series of activities."
SOUNDBITE 3 (French): ANNE AFFIE, Volunteer
"The purpose of our event is to show everyone how much damage our daily behavior causes to the environment. We throw plastics and bottles into the sea, which are washed back onto the beaches, all of which pose a threat to our health."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Abidjan.
