India: Officials successfully rescue tiger after it attacked villager

A tiger was rescued after being it killed a villager three months ago was finally tranquilized and captured by forest officials in central India's Madhya Pradesh.

The incident took place in Surai forest area of Raisen district on June 13.

Visuals showed the tranquilized tiger being carried in a cage inside a vehicle, with a large crowd of locals seen present at the incident spot.

Speaking to Newslions, Vijay Kumar, Divisional forest officer (DFO), Raisen said the officials received an information that a tiger attacked and killed a villager on May 15. A team of 100 forest personnel, including DFOs, rangers, field experts, and doctors, camped in the forest. Using five elephants and over 170 cameras to track the tiger’s movements and efforts paid off when the tiger was spotted near Surai forest.

After two tranquilizer darts, the tiger was finally subdued around 2:30 PM. It is currently undergoing health checkups at Satpura Tiger Reserve, it will be released back into the wild after 5 to 6 days of observation.

About a month ago, this tiger is believed to have killed Maniram Jatav, a resident of Neemkheda, along with over 12 cattle. This incident marked the first human fatality caused by a tiger near Bhopal in decades.

Residents were warned against entering the jungle to collect tendu leaves. The fear was so intense that farmers stopped going to their fields. Villagers in Obedullaganj demanded swift action from forest officials. After a four-week chase, the tiger is now in a rescue shelter.
