STORYLINE:

Thailand and China collaborate extensively in marine conservation and disaster prevention.

The two countries inaugurated the China-Thailand Joint Laboratory for Climate and Marine Ecosystems in Phuket in June 2013.

As the first of its kind between the two countries, the lab is operated by the First Institute of Oceanography, the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, and the Phuket Marine Biological Center of Thailand.

Chalermrat Sangmanee, a fishery biologist from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources Thailand and the Thai director of the joint lab, said protecting marine ecology is a global task.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Thai): CHALERMRAT SANGMANEE, Thai director of the China-Thailand Joint Laboratory for Climate and Marine Ecosystems
"The ocean has no national boundaries. Having only one country to conduct research is not enough to understand the overall information. Protecting marine ecology is a global task that requires joint efforts from all countries."

Director of Phuket Marine Biological Center Tipamat Upanoi said another achievement for the lab is the development of the Thailand marine environment forecasting system.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Thai): TIPAMAT UPANOI, Director of Phuket Marine Biological Center
"We will follow up information, observe various marine life, and set up hydrological observation buoys in the ocean. We put the information together for comprehensive analysis and evaluation, and then we put the information online, and the public can use this information very well to look at wave trends, sea temperature changes, wind speeds, and so on."

In recent years, climate change has profoundly impacted marine ecosystems.

Chalermrat said the lab is now taking protective measures to promote the restoration of marine ecosystems.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Thai): CHALERMRAT SANGMANEE, Thai director of the China-Thailand Joint Laboratory for Climate and Marine Ecosystems
"If there is a crisis, what steps can we take to deal with it, to help the marine ecosystem have a chance to repair itself? That's what we're trying to do right now."
