Ice blocks carried into classrooms to help young students cope with severe heat in China
Large blocks of ice have been carried into classrooms at primary schools in Changsha, Hunan Province, to help students cope with the severe heat.
According to the local meteorological department, the temperatures reached 39 degrees Celsius seeing some students experience dizziness and nausea.
Given the limited cooling equipment in the classrooms, each having only four fans and no air conditioning, the parent committee proposed a solution to use ice blocks for cooling, which the school actively supported.
To implement this cooling measure, parents actively contacted ice suppliers to order ice blocks. School staff and parents worked together to unload the ice blocks from trucks and distribute them to the classrooms in need of cooling. To ensure the ice was evenly distributed in the classrooms, parents also brought various containers, such as bathtubs and storage boxes, to hold the ice.
According to teachers at the school, placing ice blocks in the classrooms, combined with the use of fans, helped reduce the indoor temperature, bringing some much-needed relief to the students.
In addition to using ice blocks for cooling, some schools in Changsha adopted other measures to cope with the hot weather, such as adjusting the school schedule and suspending outdoor activities to ensure the health and safety of the students.
