Footage shows severe flooding at Barcelona airport on Monday morning as the severe weather that wreaked havoc in Valencia brought heavy rain across Spain.

Officials suspended trains and flights were cancelled in the northeast Catalonia region, where eight million residents live.

Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said he was acting on a request from civil protection officials.

Alerts were also sent to mobile phones in Barcelona with warnings of 'extreme and continued rainfall'. Residents were told to avoid any normally dry gorges or canals.

Officials have reported at least 215 fatalities attributed to the destructive weather system that hit the country last week. It occurs when cold and warm air converges to create rain clouds. This event is thought to be becoming more common due to climate change.

This phenomenon is referred to locally as DANA, a Spanish acronym for high-altitude isolated depression. Unlike typical storms, it can develop independently of polar or subtropical jet streams.
