This is the shocking moment a driver slams into the open door of a police car as an officer enters the vehicle while conducting a routine traffic stop by the roadside.

Dashcam and body-worn footage show the officer from the Mentor Police Department stepping back just in time as a speeding vehicle dangerously passes close to the patrol car on Ohio State Route 306 in the United States on Friday, November 15.

The vehicle rams into the patrol car's open door as it flies past, continuing without stopping.

It is unclear whether authorities are searching for the driver who nearly struck the officer.

Officials are urging drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency personnel, hazard vehicles, or tow trucks.

The Mentor Police Department reminded the public: 'It's not just a courtesy—it's the law.

'Losing officers or first responders in the line of duty isn't an option. Let's work together to keep everyone safe.'
