A BYD electric car charging point caught fire while the vehicle was plugged in.

The charging metre of the grey Chinese-made vehicle suddenly burst into flames in the early hours of the morning in Bangkok, Thailand, on the evening of June 27.

Footage shows the port attached to the wall igniting, before triggering the house's safety system, which cut off the electricity supply.

Upon noticing the power outage, the homeowner rushed downstairs to check the garage, only to discover the fire had spread.

She reportedly called her partner to help extinguish the flames.

No one was injured, and no property damage was reported.

Charging ports can short-circuit for various reasons. Chargers may supply electricity at a rate lower than the car can handle, especially when the battery is nearly full.

Other factors like debris buildup or general wear and tear can also contribute to such fire incidents.

BYD and Tesla are the two largest manufacturers of electric cars.
