A 60-year-old man has been rescued from a rainforest in Brazil after surviving on rainwater for seven days.

Firefighters saved farmer Jose Lino Ferreira de Melo after being missing for seven days in a wooded area of Pedras de Maria da Cruz in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The rescue occurred on Sunday, December 8, after the man disappeared while walking towards his sister's house.

The family said he was last seen at 6 am on December 2.

The pensioner had left barefoot with a hoe. Friends and family began searching for him the same day.

However, heavy rain in the Riacho Buriti area, hampered the search for their relative.

Rescuers eventually found some clothes he had been wearing when he disappeared, with police using sniffer dogs and a drone with thermal imaging to help search an area of eight kilometres.

He was found weak and dehydrated.

Police said he survived without food and drank only water from rain and nearby lakes, facing intense downpours and heat.

The victim was airlifted to the hospital, receiving initial medical care on the aircraft. He was later taken to Santa Casa de Montes Claros Hospital in stable condition.
