Landslide crashes down mountain in front of locals in India
A landslide crashed down a mountain in front of locals in India.
Dramatic footage shows massive debris tumbling into a nearby river in Chetuldhar, on the Dharchula-Tawaghat National Highway in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, on Saturday morning, December 21.
A cloud of dust was also captured in the video, with residents and authorities in the nearby area watching the incident unfold.
Officials confirmed that no vehicles were on the site at the time of the collapse, averting a potentially disastrous collision.
Authorities promptly arrived at the site to assess the situation.
Bhupendra Singh Mahar, Pithoragarh's District Disaster Management Officer, said: 'The landslide was likely triggered by ongoing road-widening works. Fortunately, the low vehicular movement during winter helped prevent casualties.'
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working to clear the debris and restore traffic flow in the area.
In another incident, a wall collapsed during a landslide, killing five children and two parents in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, after heavy rains on December 1. Part of the wall reportedly fell onto homes located downhill.
On September 15, a large block of mountain granite slid down the slope, obstructing the Dharchula-Tawaghat National Highway near Chaitalkot in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand.
