Hood River, United States - January 01, 2025 On New Year's Day, an Oregon State Police (OSP) trooper helped wrangle a loose cow that had made its way onto I-84 near Hood River after a dramatic chase across several miles. The 4-H steer, which had escaped a property in Washington by jumping over two fences, was first spotted by anglers on January 1 after it swam across the Columbia River. Several travelers attempted to corral the animal, but it evaded capture, jumping the median and heading toward the freeway’s eastbound lanes. The cow continued along railroad tracks and through a tunnel before a young woman calmly stopped it by standing in front of it. The exhausted cow finally collapsed, allowing it to be loaded into a horse trailer for transport. OSP thanked the Hood River Police Department for their help and roping skills, and Union Pacific Railroad for halting trains during the rescue. The cow is now awaiting reunion with its owners.
