This is the dramatic moment an eruption rocked the Sakurajima Volcano in Japan.

Footage shows the volcano sending an ash plume 1km into the sky in the Kagoshima Prefecture, early morning on January 16. Close-up video shows lava spilling out of the crater.

Authorities said it was the volcano's 11th explosion of the year, sparking fears of a possible impending magmatic eruption.

Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent eruptions. Originally an island, it became a peninsula after a significant eruption in 1914.

Japan lies along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
