This is the spectacular moment Kilauea Volcano spewed lava fountains as it erupted in Hawaii.

Footage shows the fiery eruption, with molten rock spurting from vents in the southwest of Kaluapele, the summit caldera, and flows streaming from the south vent on January 17.

A wind vortex, known as a 'lavanado', was observed swirling within the caldera. As it moved across the floor, the column dislodged incandescent crust from the ground, sending glowing fragments into the air.

Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic mass and is the central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Its caldera is nearly three miles long and two miles wide, with an area of more than four square miles.
