Heavy rain triggered a landslide in Indonesia, killing at least two residents.

The disaster struck Ranteballa village, Latimojong District, Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi province, on Saturday evening, January 25.

Dramatic footage shows rescue teams and villagers at the scene, with several vehicles damaged by the rubble.

Adi B Tenriesa, head of the Luwu Regency Disaster Management Agency, reported that the two locals were buried under soil and debris. Four others were injured.

Adi said: 'Two people died. One person has been found, the other person is being evacuated, and the body will later be taken to the nearest hospital before being transported to the funeral home.'

In a separate incident, a married couple, aged 77 and 70, were buried under a rockslide in Lembang Sarambu, Buntu Pepasan District, North Toraja Regency, on January 23. The landslide also disrupted the road linking Lembang Sarambu to Sapan Subdistrict, with the Pepasan dead end completely blocked, making it impassable to vehicles.

Indonesia and some neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia have been experiencing monsoon season, which brings soaring temperatures followed by powerful afternoon rainstorms, leading to widespread flash floods.

Landslides are common in the country, particularly during the rainy season. The risk is further exacerbated by deforestation and illegal mining activities in remote areas.
