A bus plunged into a river in Cambodia, leaving at least 13 passengers dead and 24 others injured earlier today.

The coach, carrying 37 travellers, crashed at the O Prasat Bridge in Santuk District, Kampong Thom province, before overturning and falling into the river at around 3 am local time.

Footage shows emergency workers using heavy equipment to pull the double-decker bus from the murky water.

Another clip shows commuters' belongings scattered along the riverbank beneath the bridge.

Deputy Police Chief of Santuk District Siv Sovanna said: 'There are 13 deaths and many others injured who have already been sent to the hospital for treatment.'

A preliminary report suggested the crash may have been caused by driver fatigue.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Cambodia has notoriously underdeveloped roads, with the country having been decimated by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and then ruled since then by the group's former henchman, Hun Sen.
