Wooden bridge collapses during political march plunging dozens into water
This is the shocking moment a wooden bridge collapsed during a political march, plunging dozens of supporters into the water in Indonesia.
Onlookers said that the footbridge in Karey Village suddenly gave way while a group was picking up Husein Tuborfon, a member of the Legislative Assembly for the Aru Islands Regional People's Representative Council in Maluku.
The incident occurred in South East Aru District, Maluku, on October 3.
Footage shows a crowd of people walking on the causeway, some carrying the Indonesian flag, when the bridge unexpectedly caved in. Most residents fell, while some attempted to rush to dry land.
Around 150 locals gathered to welcome Husein after he was inaugurated as a member of the Aru Islands DRPD.
The legislator arrived in the village from Dobo City by speedboat and was then escorted by convoy to his residence.
Head of the public relations section, Second Police Assistant Inspector Yubilino Sahertian, said: 'The bridge collapsed when it was crossed by a group of residents picking up Husein Tuborfon. This incident resulted in 44 people being injured, including Mr Husein.'
Some victims were reportedly crushed by the bridge's concrete and iron. They were treated at the Meror Health Centre.
Husein is said to have suffered back pain following the incident.
Police Assistant Inspector Yubilino said authorities had closed the area while the bridge is repaired.
