A huge monitor lizard was ushered away from a road using a broomstick.

Footage shows the 5ft (2m) reptile being guided to the side by a motorcycle taxi rider in Bangkok, Thailand on February 17.

The Godzilla-like lizard crawled to the corner where there was a hole leading to a canal.

It was safe and evacuated from the area where there were many passing trucks and cars.

Onlooker Aey said: 'We were shocked when it crawled past our feet. It looked like a crocodile because it was so big.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
