A FedEx cargo plane's engine exploded moments after take-off in New Jersey this morning.

Footage shows flames pouring from the engine of the Boeing 767 at a low altitude shortly before 8 am local time.

Driver Sofiane recorded the video, in which a trail of fire could be seen coming from the aircraft with the purple and orange livery of the cargo carrier.

The stricken Boeing 767-300 had taken off from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, according to flight data.

After taking off at 7:58am, the flight's right engine erupted in flames. Onlookers described a loud boom and the plane was forced to turn back for an emergency landing at 8:07am.
