Gaza Strip: Gaza residents support Arab alternative over Trump's displace plan
Residents of the Gaza Strip are banking on outcomes from an emergency Arab summit in Egypt to offer a viable alternative to American and Israeli plans for forced displacement from their homes. The emergency summit kicked off in Egypt's New Administrative Capital on Tuesday, gathering Arab leaders and delegations as well as representatives from international organizations to discuss the latest developments in Palestine and the reconstruction of Gaza. In his opening speech of the Extraordinary Arab Summit-Summit for Palestine, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said Egypt has worked, in cooperation with Palestine and international institutions, to formulate a comprehensive plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing its residents. The plan will start with an early recovery phase to address urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza and proceed with a reconstruction phase, he said, calling for adopting and supporting the plan. During the summit, Arab leaders adopted several decisions of great significance for the progress of the Palestinian cause and sought to stop Israel's plans to expel Palestinians. The summit also discussed and approved Egypt's plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip without displacing its residents. Experts said while there are hopes that the ceasefire agreement signed between Hamas and Israel will continue to hold, there are growing concerns that the Israeli government will try to impose new changes that could lead to a resumption of fighting. And they sent a very clear message not only to the Israeli or American sides, but to the whole world, which is, what is happening now is the displacement of the Palestinian people. This puts pressure on them and all their sources of life."; 6. Various of destroyed buildings, displaced people; 7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ghazi Aloul, displaced Palestinian: "We are very happy with the outcome of the summit. For the first time, we feel that Arabs are united in their commitment to prevent Palestinians from leaving their land in Gaza. The plan proposed by Egypt could frustrate all the plans of the new Trump administration."; FILE: Washington D.C., USA - Date Unknown 8. Various of White House; 9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammed Sakak, displaced Palestinian: "I hope that Arab countries are partner countries that play an active role in every stage of our lives, and I hope that they can help in rebuilding infrastructure for these people, who have been suffering for 50 or 60 years. Why can't we live like human beings? We are also people who understand, we have awareness, we have children, we have girls, we have boys, we can live, and let us live."; 11. Various of destroyed buildings, displaced people; 12. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ayad Jalal, political analyst: "Israel wants to demonstrate that it can do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, and it does not want a ceasefire. Why does it not want a ceasefire? There are two important reasons. The first is Israel's freedom of action [within the Gaza Strip], because Netanyahu will say that he did not sign the ceasefire. The second is that Israel’s far-right government does not want to reach a ceasefire agreement either. Therefore, it is in Netanyahu's interest to continue the state of no war and no peace."; Cairo, Egypt - March 4, 2025 13. Various of emergency Arab summit in progress.
